Abstract

One of the greatest challenges for the music educator involves the varying levels of a musical skill presented by students on entry to teacher training programmes. While an undergraduate degree in music is specifically designed with a view to equipping the potential graduate for teaching purposes, it would be fair to assume that on graduation the general skills required to teach in a classroom and deliver a curriculum would be acquired. Consequently, a key component of the music teacher’s role is to enable and support their students in their musical development while acknowledging and respecting their musical difference; no small task for any teacher and most especially for the beginning teacher. Students are encouraged to take an elective studies in musical performances, ensuring that they continue with their own musical practice while beginning their professional journey as a music teachers.
