Abstract

Although the field of sport injury psychology has continued to evolve and expand in its advancement of theory, research, and practice, it has remained individualistic over time (i.e., focusing on the “inner” world of injured athletes’ thoughts and feelings and the use of self-care strategies to help them help themselves). This chapter aims to challenge the field and encourage researchers and practitioners to broaden their analytical gaze. The chapter describes the multilevel model of sport injury (MMSI) and proposes that injured athletes impact, and are impacted by, their relationships, institutions, and cultures. The chapter also illustrates how psychological experiences of athletes with injuries are produced by, within, and through social structures and associated environments and cultures.
