Abstract

A realization of the similarities between documents and programs is essential to the advancement of the discipline of document processing. The availability of WYSIWYG word-processing systems has enabled relatively unskilled individuals to produce documents with very impressive visual effects. Unfortunately, this lack of formal approach could lead to problems especially for widely shared applications. Many have yet to realize the need to have a formal approach in defining document structures and addressing their semantics, much like those intended for programs. Undertaking such an approach would yield benefits similar to those achieved for the software and database community: development of processes to ensure high quality development of reasoning techniques, and development of support tools.
