Abstract
The possibility of producing porous silicon nitride by modifying the amounts of sintering additives has been investigated. Porous specimens were also produced using rice, corn and potato starches as fugitive additives. Density, porosity and open porosity have been measured. Microstructure has been studied by means of SEM. The variation of relative Young's modulus (E/Eo) as function of porosity has been investigated. Biaxial flexure strength of some of the porous structures fabricated with starch have also been measured.
