Abstract

Electrochemical pickling in the manufacture of stainless steel strips is characterized by simultaneous multi-ionic transport, driven by diffusion, migration and convection, heterogeneous electrochemical and homogeneous chemical reactions. In this contribution, we summarize recent numerical and asymptotic results in the development of a 8-ion model for the process. In addition, a preliminary asymptotic analysis for the inclusion of homogeneous chemical reactions in the model, which had been omitted hitherto in analytical work for simplicity, is carried out and is found to agree qualitatively with earlier numerics.
