Abstract

Norbert Elias (1897-1990) was a German sociologist whose work addressed social change and the development of habitus since the Middle Ages. While it was not his goal to explain consumption, he used evidence of changing consumption practices and standards to illustrate the shift to a more emotionally self-controlled and stable personality structure in the context of increasing social interdependencies over many generations.
