Abstract

This chapter analyzes the religious and emotional dimensions of published thank you letters in the 'Irish Messenger' from the 1920s to 1960. These letters were part of a ritual connected to the Catholic cult of the Sacred Heart, in which their authors publicly gave thanks for answered prayers. The letters provide an illuminating view of Irish women's lives, religion, emotional lives, and world view. This work reveals how ordinary Irish Catholic women gave meaning to misfortunes, suffering and loss, through the lens of popular Catholicism.
