Abstract
Various aspects of the Second International Workshop on Empirical Studies of Software Maintenance (WESS'97), held in October 3rd, 1997, Bari, Italy, are discussed. The philosophy of the workshop is that a true understanding of software maintenance issues can be achieved through empirical studies. WESS'97 was organized as four parallel interactive working groups such as defect detection and analysis, program analysis, impact analysis, and testing, maintainability of object-oriented systems, and maintenance practices within and across organizations. It was suggested that collaboration should involve finding volunteers to analyze common problems, and coordinating several kinds of studies to build compelling evidence.
