Abstract
Esports represents a rapidly emerging model for understanding human expertise and cognitive performance under pressure. Elite players often described as “cognitive athletes” demonstrate exceptional visuospatial attention, decision-making, flexibility, and coordination in dynamic, time-constrained digital environments. These demands position esports as an ecologically valid platform for examining cognition in action, surpassing the limitations of traditional laboratory tasks. Research consistently shows that competitive gaming enhances cognitive domains such as attention, working memory, and executive control, particularly within fast-paced action genres. Measuring these abilities, however, remains challenging. Standardised cognitive tests offer precision but limited ecological validity, while gamified assessments integrate experimental rigour with immersion and motivation. When combined with multimodal physiological measures such as eye tracking, EEG, fNIRS, and autonomic monitoring, these tools can provide a holistic understanding of performance and fatigue. Emerging interventions, including physical training, mental simulation, and non-invasive brain stimulation, further highlight esports’ potential for cognitive enhancement. As the field advances, esports science offers a unique opportunity to refine assessment methods, optimise mental performance, and explore the broader limits of human cognitive adaptability in technologically mediated environments.
