N2 - Biological tissues exhibit swelling or shrinking behaviour. This behaviour is caused by water binding. Biological tissues are able to bind water because of the fixed charges of the solid skeleton. These electrical charges are responsible for a variety of physical phenomena such as streaming potentials, diffusion potentials, electro-osmosis, electrophoresis and swelling.
