Abstract

This paper1 presents research into Internet Quality of Service (QoS) data capture and analysis techniques for QoS performance profiling of global Internet paths. Through a support program available to collaborators within the European Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE) Atlas project, it is possible to set-up an active Internet probing network whereby raw QoS measurements may be made and captured along selected Internet paths. Employing this facility, this paper presents a way towards developing local to global large-scale Internet QoS performance profiling. Mainly for demonstration purposes, this profiling is done for a set of radial Internet paths which cover 22 cities in eleven countries in six continents. The results, a selection of which are presented here, also may serve as a historical Internet performance benchmark for the particular Internet paths and countries investigated here.
