Abstract
Many processes used in practice from energy and infrastructure sectors to specialty chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors involve processes with phase change. Based on the basic understanding and background of multiphase flows, applications of computational models for understanding and optimizing processes involving flows with phase change are briefly discussed in this chapter. The key issues in flows with phase change are discussed first. Various modeling approaches to model flows with phase change are discussed. To illustrate the application of modeling, three categories of flows with phase change (liquid to gas, liquid to solid, and gas to solid) are discussed. Finally, a brief commentary is provided on the current status of modeling flows with phase change and path forward. Judicious use of computational models will at least be useful to qualitatively grade different designs and configurations of process equipment handling flows with phase change and may greatly assist engineering decision-making process.
