Fuel-sensitivity analyses for jet and piston-propeller airplanes

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

A methodology to investigate the impact of fuel burn during cruise for jet and piston-propeller airplanes, is presented. The governing performance parameters of an airplane in cruise include weight, drag, and specific fuel consumption (SFC). The mathematical formulation helps to assess proposed airplane design as part of sensitivity. The governing parameters are needed to be carefully measured for effective management of airplane's weight, specific fuel consumption, and drag. The impact on cruise fuel burn is estimated from the relative changes to end-of-cruise weight, SFC, lift-to-drag ratio. The governing parameters is derived for a constant height cruise by using a computer model of an airplane. The governing parameters for a jet airplane are weakly linked, which depends on the airplane's performance characteristics.
