Abstract
An overview of geotechnical education at Irish Universities and Institutes of Technology in 2008 is presented in this paper. This report comes about one year after the peak of an economic boom in Ireland, during which construction activity has reached record levels. Geotechnical engineers are in great demand, with a growing requirement to develop brownfield, marginal and contaminated sites. Traditional 4 year Bachelors of Engineering degrees will soon be replaced by 5 year Masters of Engineering degrees as the minimum educational standard necessary to be eligible for chartered engineer status.
