Abstract

An open call was made from a workshop in conjunction with the International Conference on Global Software Engineering (ICGSE, 2007), for the topic 'Studying Work Practices in Global Software Engineering in early 2009'. The papers the special section included the Creation of Location-Spanning Work Practices by Global Software Developers and Methodological reflections on a field study of a globally distributed software project. The selection committee identified various aspects while examining the research papers. Defining the unit of analysis is an important decision when designing a study and undertaking research in a distributed environment is also considered. The research papers also aligned data collection practices with organizational work practices and adapted to different time zones. The studies also uncovered previously unrecognized problems of global software development and developed a framework for analyzing the activities of global virtual teams.
