How family carers support profoundly intellectually disabled persons in decision making: A literature review

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter presents a literature review, an element of a larger study, exploring Irish family carers' experiences of supporting person, living with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities, in decision making. An eclectic approach to the review was warranted as little empirical evidence was found. In all 23 policies/reports are reviewed in addition to 25 theoretical and research papers. Review findings are presented in three sections; 1) General information and background to supporting decision making 2) Models of 'supporting decision making' and 3) Challenges within a "Principle Based Concept." The main contribution of this literature review is the provision of a baseline to support forthcoming research in the area of SDM and secondly to highlight tensions within implementing what appears initially as a normative and simplistic concept.
