Abstract

Design of an improved real time Emulator of a Wind Turbine Dynamic Model (EWTDM), based on an asynchronous motor driven by a frequency converter, is presented in this paper. The EWTDM emulates both the dynamic response and static speed-torque characteristics of a horizontal axis wind turbine model. In order to achieve a more precise emulation of the realistic situation, a torque reference of the frequency converter is compensated for viscous friction of the asynchronous motor and the difference between moments of inertia of the wind turbine and the asynchronous motor. An estimated value of electromagnetic torque of asynchronous motor is used as feedback signal to an additional torque PI controller. A desired speed-power characteristics of the load of the wind turbine is achieved by using a controllable load realized by a permanent magnet synchronous generator connected to a diode rectifier and DC/DC buck converter.
