title = "Individualising gamification: Investigating how learning styles impact upon gamification",
abstract = "Gamification is taking the mechanics, aesthetics and motivational tools traditionally associated with games and applying them to non-traditional problem spaces and domains. One such domain which is exciting increased academic and practitioner interest is education. While demonstrating the potential utility of gamification as a pedagogical tool, this research has also highlighted several areas that require further investigation before definitive conclusions can be drawn. In particular, there are repeated calls in the literature for empirical investigations into the impact of gamification at the level of the individual. This paper investigates how differing learning styles amongst individuals impacts upon the utility of gamification as a pedagogical tool. We measure three independent variables: individual's perception of gamification, individuals participation in a gamified learning intervention and individuals performance in a gamified learning intervention. The data suggests three significant relationships. The data shows that individuals who have an active learning style have a positive perception of gamification. Individuals whose learning style is global also have a positive perception of gamification. In terms of performance, we find that individuals who have a tendency towards a global learning style also perform better in the gamified learning intervention.",
