Abstract

There was a time in Spain, during the 1960s, when epic period dramas and spaghetti westerns were vastly shot in the communities of Madrid, Andalusia, both Castiles and Aragon. Similarly to the tourism boom, superproductions’ sets would bring in Hollywood stars to shoot, visit, and hang out with and within the Francoist society. The southeastern Tabernas desert in Almería became a Peninsular West under the rule of US-American and European film studios, with locals serving as extras. Despite Netflix being one of the first, and certainly the most successful, to change the mode of consumption to a point where other platforms replicate their style, interface, pricing, labeling, etc., the truth of the matter is that not only the perspective of competitiveness is the sole factor that has tipped the scales toward enjoying series and movies from private screens.
