N2 - Published in 2022, the Irish Travellers’ Access to Justice Report revealed deep distrust between the Mincéirí and Irish criminal justice bodies, including the judiciary, based in a perception of anti-Traveller bias. In this article, the authors set out the results of the Report, describe the concept of unconscious bias and identify some effective solutions, including those used in other high-stakes environments, such as healthcare, where decision-makers face complex and life-changing decisions. Measures adopted in judicial training to address the problem of bias in judicial decision-making are assessed and suggestions are made to expand and improve the response of the judiciary in this respect.
