Abstract
The kinetics of densification and transformation for silicon nitride pressureless sintered with a mixed magnesia/neodymia additive are reported. Shrinkage of compacted pellets is rapid, densities of 2. 95-3. 05 gcm** minus **3 being readily achieved after thirty minutes at 1650 degree C. The kinetics of the sintering process are interpreted using the Kingery model. The magnesia-neodymia additive system is highly promising from the point of view of densification, resultant grain morphology and crystalline grain boundary phases, all of which are crucial for good high temperature mechanical properties.
