Abstract
Massive air embolism in a patient with severe hemoptysis is described. The hemoptysis was due to a side-to-side perforation of a left pulmonary artery branch to the superior branch of the left lower lobe bronchus secondary to an adjacent lung abscess. Intermittent positive pressure ventilation caused increased intrabronchial pressure and direct passage of air into the left lower lobe pulmonary artery, which caused a fatal embolism.
