Abstract

An Irish Anglican clergyman by profession and novelist, playwright, and poet by necessity, Charles Robert Maturin (1780–1824) is remembered today as the eccentric author of the Gothic masterpiece Melmoth the Wanderer (1820). He is also frequently mentioned alongside Maria Edgeworth (1768–1849) and Sydney Owenson (1768–1849) as one of the central figures of Irish Romantic fiction. Nevertheless, the majority of Maturin's works remain largely inaccessible to readers without access to a research library.
