Mobile phones as tools to enhance the traditional educational experience

Abstract

Developments of a context-sensitive InfoStation-based architecture, tasked with supporting the provision of mobile information services within a University domain, are outlined in this paper. These services are designed to complement the traditional educational practices, providing an enhanced blended learning experience for students, and as such aid the students assimilation of the presented information. The developments described are focused on exploitation of the greatly expanding functionality, including multi-media capabilities, of modern handheld mobile devices. For those students with such devices who voluntarily participate and access the services on offer through the InfoStations, the technology seeks play a role in enhancing their learning and educational experiences. It also forges experience in the greater integration, exploitation, utilization and management of these modern wireless technologies in educational environments.
