MULTINATIONAL NETFLIX: Toward a Streaming Matrix of Reproducibility

Abstract

Whereas Spain used to be an importer of audiovisual productions, it is now in the midst of a transition to serving as a center of export. The streaming opportunity for the peninsular audiovisual industry has been consolidated around a reduced group of creators, actors, and producers while displaying a rising reproductivity of subjects, genres, and aesthetic paradigms. To explore this phenomenon, Pereira Boán expands the concept of narrow-casting to the peninsular audiovisual industry under Netflix’ influence. In broader terms, Pereira Boán argues that Netflix epitomizes Marshall McLuhan’s core idea ‘the medium is the message’ in an exponential fashion. The SVOD phenomenon catalyzes not only McLuhan’s cinema’s ‘transition from lineal connections to configurations’ but also Walter Benjamin’s postulates on reproducibility and auratic decay.
