Abstract

The book takes as its focal point the results of the N Ireland Attitude Survey of 1978. It seeks to blow away myths and to reveal the complexity that exists where simplicity has hitherto been assumed. An Economic and Social Research Institute Survey was also conducted in the Irish Republic at the same time and has made possible unique comparisons between opinion in N Ireland and opinion in the Republic. Questions that the two surveys sought to answer were: that attitudes have hardened after more than a decade of violence; that the heart of N Ireland's constitutional problem lies in the dilemma of whether to coax it towards an All-Ireland framework or maintain it firmly in the UK; that the setting up of N Ireland as an independent state would cut through this dilemma; that the strengths of the rival nationalisms are worth investigating as national identity lies at the heart of the problem. -P.Compton
