Abstract
A study is made of the interaction between long and short waves in an ideal fluid. Equations are derived and solutions are constructed which describe the propagation of a long gravity wave soliton on the surface of the fluid in the presence of a quasi-monochromatic short wave. A generalization to a wide spectrum of short waves is carried out. A solution which describes a solitary internal wave accompanied by a packet of short surface waves is found.
