Abstract

The rise of the controversial ʼnew woman’ figure in 1890s Britain had important reverberations transnationally but her influence and the specifically Irish origins of this first-wave feminist figure have been forgotten in the intervening century. Irish writers associated with this movement include some of the best-known names in new woman fiction and drama, including George Egerton, L. T. Meade, George Moore, Katherine Cecil Thurston, E. L. Voynich, and the writing couple Somerville and Ross, just to give some examples.
