Abstract

The normal microbial flora of the human body is complex. Many variables affect the ability of microorganisms to colonize humans, and colonization occurs after birth. As humans mature, their normal microbial flora can also alter depending on exposure to the environment. Microorganisms usually live in or on the human body; most are beneficial for human health, some are benign, and others can be pathogenic. This chapter details the commensal microorganisms that live in or on the human body. These are the normal microbial flora of the healthy human body (Fig. 1).
