Abstract

The use of tow-steered composites to tailor the aeroelastic behaviour of a simple composite wing is optimised, in particular the ability to improve both flutter / divergence airspeeds and gusts loads is investigated. An assumed modes model of a simple rectangular unswept composite wing combined with modified strip theory aerodynamics is used. Symmetric lay-ups are considered where the fibres are allowed to vary in orientation along the wing span and also the chord. A range of different tow-steered design strategies are examined in order to determine the best approach to improve the aeroelastic behaviour. Tow-steered laminates are shown to allow enhanced designs compared to traditional unidirectional composites.
