Nenagh is a market town. Its street names commemorate famous and less famous men, its public art celebrates men active in sport, the arts and commerce. Female representation is more subtle and less visible – Lady Justice on the courthouse, St Mary whose name is associated with the Christian churches and schools in the town, and almost unnoticed, Mother Paul, recognised for her work establishing St Paul’s playground.

Where, then, are the ordinary women whose lives also helped shape our town? Through the publication of this booklet our intention is to rebalance this inequity and open a discussion on the contribution of women in our shared past and present lives. In this edition a selection of women whose lives reflect how the educational, economic, political, social and cultural life of Nenagh and beyond was enhanced by their contributions. The timeline chosen extends from the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in 1854 up to the modern day.
