Abstract

The oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) offers a direct route for the production of ethylene from methane. Sn doped Li/MgO is among the best catalysts known for this reaction. It is assumed that the formation of Li2Mg3SnO6 is responsible for the improved properties. It was shown that doping with Zr can result in the formation of various mixed oxides, among which a compound that is structurally identical with Li2Mg3SnO6:Li2Mg3 ZrO6. The goal of this study is to clarify the relative importance of all phases that can be present in zirconia doped Li/ MgO catalysts with respect to activity, selectivity and stability. In this way the possibilities and limitations of this type of system can be identified.
