Abstract

Glasses occur in all sialon systems and are important because the mechanical properties of nitrogen ceramics, particularly their strength and creep resistance, depend markedly on the amount and characteristics of the intergranular glass. The present work compares glasses with the same cation ratios and shows that viscosity, glass transition temperature, refractive index, and resistance to devitrification all increase initially with increasing nitrogen concentration. The technological potential of producing glass ceramics in which the crystalline phases are refractory nitrides and oxynitrides is also assessed.
