Pathophysiology of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the pathophysiology of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), focusing on the intricate biological mechanisms of infection induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). The discussion begins with an analysis of the virus's structural characteristics, its genetic adaptability, and the critical role of the spike protein in facilitating host cell entry through ACE2 receptors. It extends to the virus's ability to affect multiple organ systems, including the respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, and gastrointestinal systems, leading to a wide array of clinical manifestations. The chapter emphasizes the disruption of the renin–angiotensin system and the consequent metabolic and functional abnormalities in affected organs.
