Abstract

Evidence on the usage of self-made materials as a pedagogical resource in Primary, Secondary and Teacher Training Education has prompted positive outcomes. However, this research has not been linked to theoretical frameworks, nor it has been applied to Master students. The main goal of this research work has been to assess the beliefs and attitudes of a group of Portuguese students enrolled in a Masters program on Teaching regarding the use of self-made materials considering Papert’s Constructionist Theory of Learning. A total of 98 students (59 males, 39 females) completed a questionnaire prior to and after a seminar on self-made materials and the hybridization of Instructional models. Results showed that the experience was positive since pre-test/post-test comparisons showed significant increases regarding the contribution of self-made material for activating teachers, its potential for interdisciplinary and extracurricular activities, as well as assessment. The Constructionist Theory of learning supports the idea that students should take ownership of their own learning process and the construction of self-made materials made this possible. Participants manifested that building items in a social context had helped them increase their learning, interest and motivation. This experience seems to have provoked positive attitudes towards the use of self-made materials in the participants’ teaching career.
