Abstract

This article examines the role that physical activity plays in the regulation of energy balance, reviews physiological adaptations resulting from exercise training, and summarizes the benefits of participation in regular physical activity. Physical activity has been shown to produce beneficial effects in terms of prevention of coronary heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer, weight control, and the promotion of mental health. Recommended guidelines for the volume of physical activity required to maintain optimal health are presented.
