Abstract

Optimal lay-ups that resist buckling and post buckling phenomena in composites are not always intuitively understood. This paper attempts to provide designers with physical insight to qualitatively understand the design consideration of composite structures against buckling. It turns out that optimal fibre orientations are those that best resist buckling mode curvatures in the case of initial buckling and relevant membrane strains in the case of postbuckling phenomena. A number of examples of plates and shells subject to various loads are considered and each optimal lay-up is explained from a physical perspective.
