Abstract
The performance of sintering additives for silicon nitride ceramics has been studied by measurement of sintering kinetics and by evaluation of the resulting microstructures. The compositions studied have been in the MgO-Y//2O//3 and MgO-Nd//2O//3 systems with attention being given to achieved density, to the grain morphology in the fired microstructure and to phase composition. The balance between the oxide pairs has been varied in seeking optimum conditions. Advantages have been found for compositions containing Nd//2O//3, particularly with respect to the aspect ratio of the grains. Attention is being given to the properties of the grain boundary phases (viscosity, ease of devitrification) in addition to the form of the fired microstructure.
