Abstract

The composites were produced by adding silicon carbide platelets or particles to the silicon nitride matrix. Pressureless sintering of the composites was carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere of 0.1 MPa pressure. The effects of the size and shape of the SiC reinforcement on the sintering behaviour were shown. The densification behaviour was improved by increasing the sintering temperature. The addition of SiC showed an increase in the fracture toughness of the composites.
