Abstract

Prior to discharge from hospital, their performance on the 30-pointFoistein Mini Mental State examination was predicted for each of 53 elderly patients by various members of geriatric multidisciplinary tearns and by the patients families. When compared with actual scores, the scores predicted by medical staff differed by 5 points or more in 34% of cases. Equally inaccurate predictions were made by staff nurses in 33% of cases, physiotherapists in 29%, occupational therapists in43% and family members in 30%. In the absence of a formal assessment, all health professionals and family members often fail to appreciate the extent of patients' cognitive impairment.
