Abstract
This chapter treats the life and works of Rosa Luxemburg and argues that despite being regarded as a political economist, the ethics of war-and pacifism in particular-were central to her world view and informed much of her wider philosophy. As such, it suggests that Luxemburg’s work provides an original critique to contemporary war and should attract far more attention than it does. The discussion that follows provides a critical overview of Luxemburg’s principal ideas and shows how her unique brand of dialectical materialism is suggestive of new approaches to the study of war. Luxemburg’s work, it concludes, encourages us to account for militarism in our ethical analysis of war.
