Abstract
This chapter examines key strength and conditioning considerations for grassroots coaches aiming to improve the different aspects of performance but more specifically the physical development of youth players. Strength and conditioning programmes for youth need to be developmentally appropriate, feasible and fun if the benefits are to be realised and long lasting. The chapter addresses some of the concerns and myths briefly outlining evidence to the contrary. It explores good practice in strength and conditioning for youth grassroots players and the scientific basis. When devising and delivering resistance training programmes at grassroots level, best practice would suggest using coaches with experience coaching youth resistance training or with a recognised professional certification. Player’s experience is an important consideration in terms of progression (volume and/or intensity) of sprint sessions. Plyometric programming needs to focus on body weight exercises, and for beginners specifically, coaching players how to jump and land with good technique rather than focusing on the actual height or distance jumped.
