Abstract

Process industries carry out physical, chemical, and biochemical transformations on raw materials for creating value-added products which meet customer needs without compromising safety, environment, and economics. Most of these transformations involve multiphase flows. In this chapter, the authors recapitulate the status of their understanding of multiphase flows. Complex multiphase flows are modeled using either experiments or computational models. The authors summarize the status and potential of applying multiphase flow modeling for process enhancements and innovations. An attempt is made to provide guidelines for judicious and effective use of multiphase flow models for applications in process industries. A brief discussion on some common pitfalls is included. Some of their thoughts on path forward are also included. The authors also present an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
