N2 - In this paper, the design and operation of plastic optical fibre (POF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor read out system is presented. The design is based on the use of the field programmable gate array (FPGA) which is aimed to provide a flexible, portable and low cost platform for this type of sensor. The light source is an RGB - red, green, blue - light emitting diode (LED) and the detector is a silicon photodiode for intensity interrogation. The LED is used with a single photodiode to provide a pseudo-wide spectrum and self-referencing capability. The system is interfaced to a computer running a Python open-source language script using Zigbee wireless connection. The script provides FPGA control, sensor data capture and visualisation, and database interfacing.
