Abstract
Although surgical voice restoration after laryngectomy has existed for many years, it has only been in the last 5 years, with the improvement in surgical techniques and development of new materials for voice prostheses, that the success rates have increased to an acceptable level here it has become a viable alternative to esophageal speech or communication using an artificial larynx. 'Surgical voice restoration' is taken in this article to include only those methods with which alaryngeal voice is produced by the passage of expired pulmonary air through a surgically constructed shunt or fistula between the trachea and the vocal tract.
