Teaching about gender: Feminist hope and praxis for the future (SDG 5)

Abstract

Gender equality is essential for a peaceful and sustainable world. Females face discrimination across all sectors of society: in health, education, political representation and the labour market. Furthermore, gender as a social construct shapes societal expectations of how individuals should behave, affecting both women and men. The SDG on gender aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This chapter will support teachers to navigate this sensitive and complex issue, and explore this SDG in an interactive, student friendly manner. Students are encouraged to consider the issue of gender equality in relation to Ireland and globally. Case studies are drawn from countries scoring high and low on the Gender Inequality Index. We provide examples of actions taken around the world to address gender inequality: from gender-responsive teaching in Ireland, to empowering girls through sport in Australia. We also propose some activities which will invite the learners to explore and deconstruct traditional gender stereotypes that are manifested in language use and popular culture. Throughout the chapter, links are made to the other SDGs and we will highlight the relevance of Quality Education to achieving the aims of the SDG on Gender. Finally, teachers are encouraged to reflect on their own practice in relation to their potential role as champions for gender equality in their schools and community.
