Abstract

Whilst it has long been recognised that all long thin-walled hollow structures exhibit a non-linear response to bending moments, the majority of analytical research has focused on circular cross-sections. This paper presents a method of predicting the non-linear behaviour of multibay aerofoil sections. Although the approach is simple, the size of the equations lends towards a solution with computer algebraic manipulation packages such as MAPLE. Comparison of the analytical models with Finite Element Analysis shows good correlation, and demonstrates the equations' capabilities in modelling the non-linear bending response of smooth orthotropic two bay aerofoils.
