Abstract

Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of both morbidity and mortality during pregnancy and in the peripartum period, despite major advances in the care of such patients. The cardio-obstetric team involves clinicians from multiple specialties providing collaborative care for pregnant patients from preconception through to the postpartum period. The goal of this team is to work together to detect cardiovascular abnormalities and to anticipate potential complications for a cardiac patient during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. In this chapter, we discuss the components, purpose, and practicalities of developing a cardio-obstetric team within a maternal health system.
