Abstract

This article presents an overview and recent developments in the extended finite element method (XFEM) in modelling discontinuities. The XFEM is detailed and its advantage over standard finite element method (FEM) explained. The paper summarises the important milestones achieved in the area of XFEM and draws attention to new and potential developments involving XFEM.
