The professional practice of language advising in the official languages workplace context in Ireland

Abstract

The role of the Language Advisor to alleviate anxieties about legislative obligations to use Irish, an official and minoritized language, in the workplace is explored. The framework combines Participatory Action Research, transformative learning in groups, and Advising in Language Learning. Core data are group conversations with staff members of a Language Support Network in 2010. Interactions with critical colleagues inform the analysis. The Official Languages (Amendment) Act 2021, and Swedish and Canadian language support exemplars situate the study in current practice. Three language advising stances are captured: facilitator of group reflective dialogue to counter linguistic insecurity, mediator of engagement with critical colleagues, and ambassador for language learning in the organization. The creation of a Centre for Participatory Professional Practice and professional development opportunities are proposed. This study will inform practice innovations in the public sector.
